Proposal to Add a 4A Tier
At the B. C. Secondary Schools Girls Basketball Association’s Annual General Meeting held March 4, 2017, at the Langley Events Centre, a motion was passed for the association’s executive to explore the possibility of adding a fourth (4A) playing tier to the senior girls basketball commission. The background and the response form for this coaches’ survey follow.
BACKGROUND: At each of the A, AA and AAA levels of play, the BCSSGBA operates a 16-team provincial championship tournament which includes at least one berth allocated to each of the province’s seven zones. Concerns have developed around the number of AAA teams centered in the Fraser Valley zone. With new schools being built and others previously closed now starting to be reopened, this concern will only increase in the Fraser Valley and potentially several other areas of the province. The reorganization of the BCSS zones presents more problems with more guaranteed assigned berths which do not take the strength of teams and zones into consideration when berthing allotments are determined. The greater goal of the association would be to allow more teams to play a longer season culminating in reaching a provincial championship tournament.
REQUEST: This survey question asks if you, as a senior girls basketball coach in this province, support the addition of a 4A tier of play to begin in the 2018-2019 season of play. The BCSSGBA must take a step to show there is a considerable desire of the member coaches to add such a tier to our commission; without such a considerable response, this motion will not proceed.
